A storm mripped through the SeatoSea campsite in the early hours of the morning of July 3 2008. At approximately 2:30 am local time winds picked up to speeds in excess of 40 kph gusting to over 80 kph. Tents insecurely staked to the ground were seen adrift in the air. Rain flys were pulled free from their respective tents and fluttered in the breeze. One cyclist, Josh Krabbe of Calgary Alberta was available for comment.

“The weather upon arrival in camp was 102 o F the sun was shining and not a cloud was seen in the sky. It seemed wise not to set up the entire tent for the evening as it was dry as a bone, no-one expected rain. I set up my tent liner and draped the fly over the top so that I’d have more ventilation. I only put one stake in the ground. Around 2 am I woke up to the sound of thunder and could see right out the top of my tent to the sky, my rain fly was fluttering in the wind held down by the one anchor point. I rolled over, got six more pegs out of my bag and crawled out the door. After securely pegging down the tent I went inside to the washroom and discussed with the entourage that was assembling. Before drifting off to catch a few more Zzzs the rain had started.”

The early rising cyclists were obviously not deterred by the storm from their ridiculous habits of crack-of-dawn-wake-up-time-antics. The first few started rustling at 5:30 and the camp was alive and in full motion before 6 am. If these habits continue there is talk of an insurgence, duct-taping the tents of the repeat-offenders closed and not letting them out until at least 6:00 am.
